The initial idea and the end experience is very different from the initial proposal. The original idea for "Pivot," was conceived at the Oculus creators lab 3.0. In partnership with the with Alex Holmes from the Diana Award we to brainstorm ideas, we wanted to incorporate into the experience. Alex suggested using backpacks as the characters which I thought was a great idea.
We also meet with the advisor from the Creator's lab 3.0 summit to get their thoughts and advice. About one month after our the Creator's Lab meeting, I submitted my initial proposal along with the storyboards for Oculus and the Advisor to review to get their input.
My first proposal got rejected base on creative and scope issues. As it was the first idea it was a great time to test the prototype and fail early and fast. It was a blessing in disguise using the feedback from Oculus and the advisors help me improve the story and made it simpler. "Pivot," took a considerable pivot storywise and we shifted the story from the bullied to the bystanders also lead to changes in the digital sets.
I resubmitted the proposal with storyboards and script, and it was approved. I learned to be very open at the early stage of development as this is the best time to experiment and pivot to improve the experience.
I included the first and second proposal to share so future creators can learn from the process.
